20% of all COVID-19 cases in the U.S. have been in children and adolescents less than 17 years of age. That’s a HUGE amount of the population who has been sick with COVID-19! Although kids/adolescents don’t get as sick compared with adults, they can still spread. So, today’s news about the vaccine efficacy and safety for 12-15 year olds is a big deal. Here are my main takeaways:
✅ 1. Look at the first picture. The gap between the red and blue lines are one big ole’ “This Vaccine Works Really Well”. =) After dose 2, efficacy was 100%.
✅ 2. Side effects were similar to what we saw in adults: Sore arm, headaches, aching, fever. (Picture 2).
✅ 3. No anaphylaxis.
✅ 4. “Should my tiny 12 year old get a smaller dose than my bigger 15 year old?” No. This doesn’t have to be administered based on weight. The safety and efficacy is the same across weight/ages in this trial. In other words, you don’t need to worry about the dosage for your kid – regardless of their weight, height, or age.
✅ 5. Please remember to get BOTH doses (Picture 3) for your adolescents (and, a reminder to get your second dose as an adult too!). Look at the difference in the neutralizing antibody titers at the timepoints of Day 1 versus Day 52 (~1 month after Dose 2). Those neutralizing antibodies are a critical component of our immune system to defend against COVID-19. It’s our body’s way of blocking infections (imagine this being your body punching COVID-19 away) and Dose 2 gives us a BIG boost. We saw this in adults and now we see it in the 12-15 year old data.
✅ ✅ ✅ This data looks really good on the safety AND efficacy for the 12-15 year old vaccines.
